In 1855 a small sect fled persecution in Germany and settled a town east of Austin. The St. Paul Lutheran Church steeple tells the history of the Wendish settlers.
The nearby Texas Wendish Heritage Museum features a collection of items that portray Wendish and Slavic life in the early days of the state. Each year the town hosts a Wendish Festival featuring cultural music, food and demonstrations on the grounds adjacent to the church and museum.
