Keith Rowe is one of the pioneers of electronic development in improvised music. Rowe, a London pop art painter and jazz guitarist in the 1960s, innovated the table-top-guitar. He laid his electric guitar flat on a table and prepared it with very different mechanical and electronic things (springs, clips, sheets, pincers, brushes contact microphones, radios). In doing so, Rowe recovered his instrument as an electro-acoustic source of sound. With that technique and with his attitude on improvising (which refers more to noise and sound instead of jazz), he
influenced a generation of musicians. Rowe became legendary by his co-operation with the group AMM (since 1965) and his work with composers like Christian Wolff, Howard Skempton, and Cornelius Cardew.
Rowe's approach treats the guitar as an encountered object. His main preoccupation has been the
development of a new language, a reassessment of virtuosity, and a change of perception of the guitar. Perhaps he is best placed within the category of a 'non painting iconoclast' with a belief that painting is not merely 'optical'. Existing between painting and music, his work is congruent with a conceptual agenda. It is a correlative for feeling, not a statement of feeling.
"Rowe is scrambling around in the bushes, making his guitar strings coruscate, opening a viewfinder on melting ice, briefly tinging the air with rogue radiowaves, before sinking into a sub-aquatic engine room and lumbering around in scrap metal " -- The Wire
