Paintings of Native America from the Stark Museum of Art
Now through April 21, 2002
The Audrey Jones Beck Building

The MFAH has embarked on a long-term partnership with the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas. The Stark Museum houses one of the finest national collections of Western American art. Opened to the public in 1978, the Stark Museum is one of many projects initiated by the Nelda C. and H. J. Lutcher Stark Foundation to enrich the cultural life of Southeast Texas.

H. J. Lutcher Stark formed his diverse collection primarily in the 1940s. Initially he focused upon paintings by contemporary Southwestern artists, then his interests expanded to include the earlier works of famed artists of the American West. The Stark collection showcases paintings by Albert Bierstadt, George Catlin, Paul Kane, Alfred Jacob Miller, Frederic Remington, and John Mix Stanley. A fascination with wildlife and hunting inspired Stark to collect the published folios of John James Audubon and other 19th- century artist-naturalists.

This exhibition highlights portraits and scenes of everyday Native American life, real or imagined. The works on view portray the various ways that major American artists such as Catlin, George Caleb Bingham, and Charles Bird King defined the image of the culture and customs of Native Americans in the 19th century.

Paintings of Native America from the Stark Museum of Art was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas. Funding in Houston is provided by Mr. and Mrs. Meredith J. Long.
