MECA Day of the Dead Festival: Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Future

"Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Future" features Dia de los Muertos celebrations from throughout Latin America, with an altar exhibit competition, foods from Latin American countries, and vendors selling authentic Latin American Dia de los Muertos arts and crafts. This festival truly is a community cultural event celebrating our ancestors and Latin American traditions. Performing artists will include Danza Azteca Tlaloc, Ambassadors International Ballet Folklorico, Houston Balalaika Society, Sargam School of Music, Kuumba House Dance Theatre, Los Skarnales, and more.

MECA's Day of the Dead Festival is held annually at MECA's colorful, art-filled campus located at the nationally recognized historic Dow School in Houston's Old Sixth Ward.

Casa Ramirez annually presents an exhibit of traditional altars for El Dia de los Muertos and Mexican folk art for this important season. A reception for altar exhibit artists and the public will be held on Friday, October 29, 2004.

Retablo Gala and Silent Auction

In this annual event, Lawndale invites Texas artists to create their own interpretation of the traditional tin devotional painting practice in Mexico known as the retablo. Every year the works created for this event range from the very traditional to the more abstract. All proceeds from the silent auction help to fund Lawndale Art Center's annual programs.

Donations: $5 or non-perishable food items, flowers, or candles

A community altar will be created throughout the night of the celebration. Guests are invited to bring mementos and photos in remembrance of departed loved ones. Anyone may also bring flowers, candles and non-perishable food to add to the main altar exhibition. Food collected will be donated to the Houston Food Bank.

Latino artists, sponsored by Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, Adrian de la Cerda, Rene Cruz, Maria Guzman, and Mario Hernandez will participate in creating individual altar installations. Their altars will be a work-in-progress beginning Sunday, October 31, culminating during the festivities, and will be up for display thru Saturday, November 6. The night's music is provided by some of Houston's best DJs: Witnes, Suma, Vic Vegas, Salucema with Diva Karina and more.

Mango's will offer a traditional Dia de los Muertos menu on this night.
