Description
|
Texas Southern University is a state supported institution and one of two comprehensive Black institutions of higher learning in the world. The 50th Texas Legislature established it on March 3, 1947, under provisions of Senate Bill 140. This legislation authorized the University to offer programs in a number of areas, including pharmacy, dentistry, arts and sciences, journalism, education, literature, law, medicine, and other professional courses. To construct a new University, the State of Texas acquired the physical plant of the Houston College for Negroes and the four-year institution was officially changed to Texas Southern University.
Located near the heart of downtown Houston, the University has grown from one permanent building and several temporary structures in 1947 to 44 buildings on a campus that sits on 145 acres. Texas Southern University has served as a cornerstone for developing the greatest potential in leaders from various socioeconomic, cultural, and racial backgrounds. In 1973, the Texas Legislature designated Texas Southern University as a "special purpose institution for urban programming." Texas Southern University is a leading University in preparing professionals for many sectors in the world.
