Organization Alley Theater

Category Theatre Organizations

Description After its modest beginnings in 1947, the Alley is healthy, thriving, and growing thanks to the ongoing support and dedication of its artists and patrons in the city of Houston and around the world. Artistically innovative, financially efficient, the Alley stands as a monument to its makers: the artists, administrators, and devoted patrons who have upheld its ideal for over half a century.

Events and
Traditions
The Alley's strength as a resident company of actors has, in part, been built upon its ongoing relationship with the growing and diverse communities of greater Houston. The extensive educational and community outreach programs available at the Alley are deeply rooted in a tradition born of the founding vision of Nina Vance of making the art of theatre available to the widest possible audience. Current programs, such as AlleyWays, Pay-What-You-Can performances, Audiotape Description for blind and sight-impaired patrons, and simultaneous Spanish translation serve as valuable resources to the Houston community. The Alley has also sought to workshop new productions of particular relevance to Houston's culturally diverse communities, among them Cantinflas and Fiesta Navideña. The Alley has distinguished itself as a training ground for future practitioners; former Alley interns and apprentices can be found working with many distinguished companies throughout the world.
