Email subject line: A Gulf Coast Juneteenth, 7pm, Thursday, June 19, Free at Miller Outdoor Theatre Email body: A Gulf Coast Juneteenth 7pm, Thursday, June 19, 2008 Free Miller Outdoor Theatre Hermann Park Juneteenth celebrates the abolition of slavery. At the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865, major general Gordon Granger brought news of emancipation to Galveston, where he proclaimed, "All slaves are free." Please join us as we celebrate this historic event at Miller Outdoor Theatre with an exceptional lineup of regional music, including ReBirth Brass Band (New Orleans, LA), Geno Delafose and French Rockin' Boogie (Eunice, LA), and Sherman Robertson with special guest Trudy Lynn (Houston, TX). In addition to exciting live music sets by highly acclaimed and legendary musicians, three young artists - Tamara Williams, Tony Henry and Corey Ledet - will present Juneteenth compositions that were commissioned for this special occasion. Check the website for full event details and artists' bios. http://www.june19.org Help us spread the news about Houston's Juneteenth celebration. Share this email with family and friends. Refer others to the website, june19.org. This is a great opportunity to gather with family and connect with others in the community. Take a floor seat close to the live music on stage. Or bring a picnic basket and a blanket or lawn chair to relax on the amphitheater hill. A Gulf Coast Juneteenth is produced by Houston Institute for Culture and Surviving Katrina and Rita in Houston, with support from the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board and the National Endowment for the Arts. Partners include the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, Community Artists' Collective, the Houston Blues Society, Project Row Houses, and Talking Back Living History.
