NEW SECTION
Take a look at the new "KIVA On Line Community," which is beginning to take shape. It will serve as the newsletter for the Houston Institute for Culture. You can see it at
http://www.geocities.com/~lostdutchman/kiva/kiva.html
There are several sections being developed, including Editorials, Recipes, Films, Books, and Explorations. These sections will rely on your recommendations, experiences, opinions, recipes (standard or strange and unusual), etc.

WRITERS NEEDED
The structure of cultural-crossroads.com is generally in place. Now we would like to add more information and encourage greater participation. Several people have offered exciting contributions in the near future. We are lacking many important features. There are several ways to help, from sending one idea, or two sentences, to contributing a little each week by writing, proofing or editing.
We would like to feature such topics as:
Texas Legends and Tragedies
Cultural Traditions, from Juneteenth to Basant Bahar
The other athlete named "Babe", Texas' own Didrickson Zaharias
Influential musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Narciso Martinez
Most of these features will be posted at
http://www.geocities.com/hifc/roads.html
Let me know if you have ideas or would like to be involved. Return an email to me or call 713-521-3686.

A COMMEMORATIVE WOODEN SPOON MOBILE
Houston artist Tricia Sweeney is creating a wooden spoon mobile to commemorate all the women who provided food for their families while maintaining multiple roles commonly associated with housewife, worker and mother. The motivation of this project is to honor all women who remained anonymous in the history of America because of their nurturing instincts.
Please consider donating at least one wooden spoon in honor of a woman who has enriched your life or has made a strong impression on you. Write her name on the spoon as a dedication, and sign your name if you wish. Also, please provide a brief summary about the woman, and how you feel she relates to the "spoon project" or why you would like to her to be honored.
It should not be a literal biography, but fond memories and historical or cultural references are encouraged. A book will accompany the "spoon project" at the exhibition providing information about all of the women who are being commemorated. If you wish to remain anonymous, sign "anonymous" or a nickname to the spoon.
Thanks for your interest and participation. We hope that you will donate at least one wooden spoon to this project which will eventually consist of several hundred dedications. Old, used,
worn, and abused wooden spoon are encouraged. However, new wooden spoons will be accepted. If you would like to contribute, contact Tricia at 713-526-2791, or emaiol her at triciasweeney@rocketmail.com.
If participating, please provide an e-mail address or a way you prefer to be contacted when the spoon mobile is completed. The show is planned for May 1999 in Houston, TX and the spoons are needed as soon as possible.
